WHY HERE
A continent narrows to a corridor and it runs overhead.
The Central Flyway funnels millions of birds between Canadian breeding grounds and wintering territory in Mexico and South America. Northwest Oklahoma sits at the point where shortgrass plains, sand-sage prairie, gypsum bluffs and inland salt flats meet.
That collision of habitat inside a small radius is what makes this corner of the state different. Species that would take a week and three states to find elsewhere can be worked in a handful of days from a single bed.

Four habitats. One basecamp.
Each of these sits within comfortable range of a morning start and an evening return.
Bird the ranch at dawn, drive out mid-day, be back for the fly-in.
Boiling Springs State Park
A pocket of dense riparian woodland dropped into open prairie. Spring-fed pools, towering cottonwoods and a canopy that pulls in warblers, vireos and woodland species you will not find on open rangeland. The sharpest habitat contrast to the ranch, and the shortest drive to reach it.
Field note
Best worked early. The wooded trails hold birds long after the prairie has gone quiet in the heat.
Fort Supply Lake
Open water is scarce out here, which is exactly why this reservoir matters. Waterfowl concentrate through the cooler months, gulls and terns work the surface, and the shoreline edges hold waders. A reliable stop for anything the dry prairie will not give you.
Field note
Numbers peak in late fall and winter. Bring a scope - the birds sit well out on open water.
Great Salt Plains
A prehistoric seabed turned inland salt flat, a shimmering white expanse that behaves like a coastline a thousand miles from any ocean. Shorebirds stage here in numbers, and it holds nesting Snowy Plovers and Least Terns. One of the genuinely unusual landscapes in North American birding.

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge
Ancient granite pushing out of the southern plains, with free-ranging bison, elk and longhorn moving below. Raptors work the ridgelines and the mixed-grass slopes hold species that do not reach the northwest corner of the state. The one that justifies a longer stay.

Plan a full day. Leave before first light and treat the drive south as part of the trip.

Mar – MayPeak northbound migration. Songbirds move through, grassland species set up territory, and the prairie is at its loudest.
Summer
Jun – AugNesting season. Least Terns and Snowy Plovers on the flats, flycatchers and nighthawks working the open country at dusk.

Sep – NovSouthbound movement builds. Shorebirds stage on the salt flats, raptor numbers climb along the mesas and ridgelines.
